The Japanese government declared that it would aim for carbon neutrality, which would reduce greenhouse gas emissions as a whole to zero by 2050.
To accommodate this for automobiles, it is necessary to improve fuel efficiency and reduce emissions of environmental pollutants. It is important to reduce the weight of automobiles in order to improve fuel efficiency.Out of the materials used in automobile bodies, there is a rise in the ratio of high-tensile strength materials that exceed 1GPa in tensile shear strength, of hot stamping materials, and of aluminum alloys. Recently, plastic materials such as CFRP (Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastics) are being used not only for automobile interiors, but also for exteriors. These represent accelerating multi-material applications.

Challenges in multi-material applications

Mechanical joining is often used in multi-material joining at present. However, mechanical joining requires auxiliary materials such as bolts and rivets, in most cases, which causes an increase in mass and cost.
Adhesives are sometimes used as a typical example of chemical bonding. However, there are problems such as the length of time required to obtain sufficient strength with an adhesive as well as the evaporation of organic solvents, which is subject to the VOC regulations due to their harmful effect to workers’ health.

DENGENSHA TOA has developed not only welding machines for aluminum alloys, but also a resin-metal joining device that enables direct joining of resins and metals.
In this resin-metal joining device, current is applied only to the metal side of the superposed resin and metal by coaxially arranged electrodes. In this resin-metal joining device, current is applied only to the metal side of the superposed resin and metal by coaxially arranged electrodes.The metal is heated by Joule heat, then this heat melts the resin.When energization is completed, the resin is cooled and solidified, and the resin and metal are joined together.

In addition to the standard stationary spot-welding machine type, there is a robotic servo-spot gun type that can be used in the vehicle body assembly line.
